Going up... next stop Savannah

We were sorry to say good-bye to our Floridian friends, but we would now be traveling a bit north to meet up with old friends. Lemmonhead (Jeff) from Pennsylvania, Kathy & Joe from Ohio, Miss Moneypenny (Susan) from North Carolina and our daughter Faron flew in from Kansas. We had all made plans to gather in Savannah for a few days of friendship, sightseeing and spirits. We all arrived at different times on Monday the 13th. We descended on the hotel commandeering the commons, we sat around the fireplace watching the KU game, catching up on each other and sharing a meal. Valentines Day found us shopping at the Paris Brocante, Paula Dean's, the Savannah Bee Co., SCAD shop and a variety of establishments in historic Savannah. The Brocante is always my favorite as I dig through the antique French documents for artful imagery. And yes I did find a stash as the cashier wanted to make sure I knew how much I was spending on the mere sheets of old paper before she totaled me out.

The day continued with a tour of the most haunted house in Savannah, the Sorrel-Weed house.

Just a note, there was no red light in this room. It only showed up on the camera.

We tried to get cupcakes at Mabel Francis Potter's Cupcake Emporium on Valentines Day, but they sold out early so had to wait a whole day for our treats. Yummy! In fact, I'm finishing the last one as I post this blog.

After we sugared up, we visited the Mercer House for a tour.

This was the murder house from the book and movie "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil".

And later that evening we went on a ghost tour with our guide Nicodemus. We were surprised when we met and he wasn't an old black guy, but a young Aussie actor. (ranked the number 1 ghost guide in Savannah) Now we would get the real scoop on the murder mystery and not the polite version the the Mercer House guide recanted to us. Stop by when I get home and I'll fill you in on all the dirty little secrets of murder, mayhem and voodoo.

Bonaventure Cemetery is one of the locations for the murder mystery. It is such a beautiful place that I always have to visit while there and take my camera. Here a couple of the shots.

The Colonial Cemetery is now a city park, but was closed at night in the late 90's as it had become a midnight sacrificial alter for the voodoo priests and priestesses to perform there rituals.

Traveling to the South...

I've been trying to find time to blog my travels to this point, but we have been putting in 18 hour days so the blogging had to wait for me to catch my breath. We started our journey almost 2 weeks ago visiting our son and daughter in law in St. Louis, and of course the grand pups. Continuing our travels we headed south to Jacksonville Florida and "A Small Cleverness". Donna and all the Floridians so graciously welcomed us. We taught classes Tuesday through Sunday. We so enjoyed everyone and loved seeing what they created. We got them started, but as you can see in the pictures, they put their own twist to the projects that went above and beyond.

I've been cleaning things out like a little buzz saw. We are revamping our classroom at Mrs. O'Leary's adding and organizing our metal working equipment and related work spaces. The classroom will be all bright and shiny and waiting for you as Art Unplugged "4" will be here before you know it.

I'm sending out the info for it now as I've had so many asking the details so they can sign up. I know we had lots of traveling friends coming in for the event and I want to give everyone a chance to join in on the fun.

We are leaving for a long teaching / buying trip in just a couple of weeks, but I'm still fitting in 4 classes and 2 open workshops before we take off.

We will arrive in Jacksonville FL the first week in February for a jam packed teaching marathon at "A Small Cleverness". http://asmallcleverness.com/newsletter.htm

We will be teaching soldering basics, card making, jewelry and we'll also be introducing several new classes. If your available to be in the area or just want to get away from the winter chill, give Donna a call.

After we leave our teaching gig in Jacksonville, we'll be gathering friends to meet in Savannah and then onto the Mt. Dora Antique Extravaganza back in Florida. Heading to Texas, stopping briefly in Houston and then onto teaching at Stamp Antonio in where else, San Antonio. http://www.stampantonio.com/. A short return home for 2 days to regroup before heading to Santa Fe for bead buying at Beadfest. Well be heading back to Texas to Round Top flea market for more junk hunting. Mid April will find us teaching at Artiscape in Ohio. One of our classes is already sold out, but we will also have a booth there selling kits, supplies and finished goods. May will take us to California to attend the Create Art Retreat and learn more stuff. Yeah! And then June is Art Unplugged.... read the following posts.

We are still running around the store like a pack of overworked elves, but all in the festive spirit. Last Saturday I offered my services free of charge for helping you design and assemble your jewelry pieces of choice. You kept me busy. Except for grabbing a few bites of salad, I kept my pliers wrapping and twisting from 9AM-8PM when I finally shut the doors. But I did return to my home studio continuing the work till 2AM. Here is a sample of some of the designs we did together.

We also had a great time on Saturday as Deb Drager and her helper Kat held a painting workshop.

We will also be teaching in Jacksonville FL at "A Small Cleverness" early February, but the classes haven't all been selected as of yet. They called me from the store yesterday and said they had already almost sold out of the 24 trees I had brought in the day before. I stayed up till 2 this morning making another batch. Maybe this will take us through the weekend. Lots of new designs in the pile. The little end wires haven't been clipped yet, but I'll have them at the store available today. See the darling tiny earwires? When you use a regular earwire finding, the trees hang so low they don't show their best, so I made these. Our little tress need to show at their best so these have been filed, shaped and polished to perfection.

Ronda Dugan shared her artistic talents with us this summer painting murals for the store. We are just now getting them installed as we wanted to make sure we could prepare them for the outdoor weather to which they will be exposed. Check out Ronda's blog at myartfulnest.blogspot.com November, My Mural Masterpiece. She also has done much artwork shown on her October posting "a bit of steam and a little more spook". I still hear your sea winds blowin'...

We have been away for the week showing at the TAEA (Texas Art Educators Show) show in Galveston TX. We had a great show and met wonderful folks. We had the great pleasure of meeting Gail and Stacey from Wired Design www.wireddesignsstudio.com and Carol from Stamp Antonio www.stampantonio.com. We are making plans for teaching classes in both of these stores in 2012 (both in San Antonio). So many asked us about classes at the show that I hope if your in the area you can check with these stores about attending. We will have a wonderful time. I'll be teaching the altered charm sampler and the copper transfer bracelet at Wired Designs and altered arts at Stamp Antonio.

I can still hear the rhythm of the ocean. We had a balcony view of the gulf so slept
with the doors open so we could enjoy the water all night. Just like a lullaby.

Our trip to Galveston Island was more than we could have wished for. Not even the flat tire on the trailer or the overnight break in of our vehicle could dampen our spirits. After the show work was over we took a VERY rare off day to explore the area. We even took morning walks on the beach gathering shells for art work yet to be imagined. But... talk about being in the right place at the right time - after shopping in the Historic Strand District, we were late to catch our harbor tour so had to return for the last one of the day an hour later. As it turns out, the city of Galveston had just spent 25 million on redoing their pier/dock to accommodate the cruise ship Carnival Magic that will be sailing from that port. Monday was their maiden voyage from Galveston. To start the event off with a bang, the cruise line was offering a Maroon 5 concert for the thousands with cruise tickets and all the travel agents etc. Our tour boat was docked next to the stage. On the tour with us was one of the Galveston tourism directors. We all agreed that the dolphins that we were going out to see were probably already asleep and wouldn't we rather see the concert instead. So she talked the captain into staying dock side. We all got to sit upper deck a few feet from the stage while sitting in the bay. Only a glass of wine would have made it better. That is one to put in the books! Maroon 5 you were awesome!

How to do Seattle in 36 hours. Our voyage was winding down, but we still had a lot on our schedule.
Arriving in the late afternoon we made a stop at the Carl S. English Jr. Botanical Gardens.

Beyond the gardens are the locks and the fish ladder. The salmon aren't running this time of year, but steel head were jumping out of the water.

Thursday evening we had some free time to see the city by night. We had dinner at Old Town Pizza that is located in the original 1888 Merchant Hotel. This is where we began our ghost tour on and under the streets of Portland.

Art and Soul Classes - Portland

Mark, Faron and myself spent 5 days attending art classes at Art and Soul. My first day found me attending Jean Vanbroderode's class of the Restless Spirit. Great teacher, great project.

We took several classes using the hydraulic press. Now that we have one in our own classroom, we will be doing more projects using this fabulous machine. Enameling classes also start Thanksgiving weekend at Mrs. O'Leary's.

All 3 of us took classes with Patricia Saggebruch working in encaustic wax. Below are examples of Tricia's work. She has 2 great books out showing the process and holds camps and workshops in her studio.

Travels to the West Coast

The end of September found us traveling up the road to Kansas City to attend the Plaza art show. It was a beautiful day to walk the streets and view the art. Of course we had to come home with some treasures.

Brunch at Irving Street Kitchen and the best breakfast I've ever had. Bread pudding french toast with blackberry plum compote and topped with creme fresh. So good that we ending our week returning to have it again. This time with fresh sliced peaches.

Our second night in Portland found us at Salty's. Arguably the best meal I've ever had.

Enjoying our never-ending meal, we relaxed watching the sun set over the Columbia River.

And yes food was still part of the pleasure as we had our breakfast overlooking the stream that ran through the courtyard.

Carolina on my mind

Mid September found me in North Carolina helping my friend Susan Moneypenny with her move back to her home state. In a 72 hour period we worked 58 hours, unpacking and assembling cabinets. The home is just off the road, but it feels like you are in the middle of the woods. I woke one morning to a fox outside my window. There are large windows throughout the house so all the birds are in constant view. I know Susan will enjoy being back home.

If it's August it's time for Stampaway. Our caravan made its way to Cincinnati to show and teach at the Stampaway rubber stamp convention. This year we were lucky enough to have a great group helping us at the show. Thanks Cecile, Michelle, Anne, Faron and of course Lemonhead. We were fortunate enough to win best embellishments again this year.

In July I traveled to St. Louis as a guest teacher at For Keeps Sake. I had met Timi and Nancy the year before, but it was my first visit to their store. It won't be my last... It was packed full with the latest papers, trims and gadgets. The samples and displays were inspiring. While there I continued our Art Unplugged classes, St. Louis style.

I was lucky enough to end my visit having breakfast at the Mud House with son Travis.

3rd Annual Art Unplugged

Summer has come and gone and I'm just now sneaking a minute or two to update you on the happenings of Artful Illusions and Mrs. O'Leary's. June saw the kick off of our Art Unplugged art retreat. We were pleased to have attendees from Michigan, Ohio, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas and our own home state of Kansas. We began with a toast in remembrance of the loved ones that have passed this year. Art can be so healing to the heart and soul. Immersing oneself into creativity and the camaraderie of others brings a feeling of peace. Thursday-Saturday we partook in bookmaking, mixed media and jewelry.

Sunday we gathered as Mark made breakfast for all of us and then we jumped into making our story bottles. They were so much fun and everyone's looked amazing. Stayed tuned as Art Unplugged 2012 is already in the works. We will be dividing it into sessions so more can join in on the fun. (Last year was sold out.) Session 1 will be held in March 2012.

I've become a junking junkie

I've even got Mark in the act. As well as him, I've snagged along a friend or two, a sister and anyone else who will follow as I take my little red cart off searching for my treasured finds. These lovelies will become the bases for many an altered project. Spring is the beginning of the season for the markets, so I've been dragging out at 4:30AM so I can drive around the state and make it back home in time for my duties. Is that dedication or just nuts? Now you know why I have to grab a changing line up of partners as no one wants to do it all with me.

Wow, what a month it has been getting everything repainted, redecorated and restocked. There is still much to do, hang crystals on the chandelier, signs hung, files sorted and so much more, but some of that will always be a work in progress. This is how Mrs. O'Leary's ~ Isabel Marie's is shaping up.

Many of you are familiar with Mrs. O'Leary's as we are in our 19th year. But let me introduce you to Isabel Marie's.

Those of you that have been coming to the store for many a year will remember my mother, Isabel Marie or as many of you called her Issy. We lost my mother 5 years ago to Alzheimer's, but until that time she would sit behind the concession stand serving up our treats or perhaps sorting and packaging in the workroom. My mother had become such a presence in my daily life that I failed to recognize how special she really was. After her passing my friends would tell me how wonderful she was. But it was especially those childhood friends that told me what an elegant woman she was remembered to be. ??? What my mother? She was just my mother, but maybe she was more... Much More. I started to remember myself the little ways she always brushed her hair or wouldn't be seen even going to answer the door without a touch of lipstick for a bit of color. Putting her face on she would say. I recall when I was very young, being tagged along to one of her friends "Come as You are" party. My mother paid the $2 (a hefty fee back in the late 50's) to be allowed to fix herself up. She wouldn't even let me go as I was. That is the essence of who she was - always a lady.

Parouse the shelves filled with vintage finds and recal a story told to you at the knee of your favorite uncle. Laugh out loud with your sister as you remember getting in sooooo much trouble lighting firecrackers in the garge next to the gas can. See, these things are not just "things" or bits of junk, but a chance to stop and smell the roses or perhaps call that cousin who you haven't talked to in years.
Isabel Marie's is a remembrance or a dedication to those ladies that have made us who we are today. My precious mother in-law Betty who used to work along side me and Jeralyn's mother Mary who we are lucky to have stopping in to give us some much needed help. Our father's too. A time to reflect on a simpler time and the sweet memories of our youth. Now my own daughter Faron is continuing the story as she is starting her own line of art and adornments called "My Mother's Daughter".

So come on the adventure with us as we sit on the porch watching the sights and sounds of Old Town or in the Boudior Reading Roon listening to the scratchy Victrola records paying Maud Murray's "Isle of Love" or Harry Von Titzer's "The Little Good For Nothing's Good For Something After All.

Our friends Kathy and Joe Lenart from Ohio (Rubber Stamp Cottage), stopped in for a short visit yesterday as they were on their way to Denver to show at a stamp convention. Our time together is always too short, but it's great to see them. They emailed from the road and ran into a tornado and now headed into snow. The midwest isn't being very hospitable.

I did want to send some info out to everyone about some upcoming classes I'll be offered at home and around the country.

A bit of history. Mrs. O'Leary's moved into this building in 1993.

Over that time we have sublet different parts of the building to other businesses. Over the last few years we have been fortunate to be growing our business even in this guarded economy. When our last sublette decided to close her doors earlier this year, we decided to fill the space with our bulging stashes of trims, paper, stamps and excitement. Wednesday morning March 30th we started the task. We have been working night and day since then and plan to have things mostly in place by this coming Saturday April 9th. Over the coming weeks, we will be adding the treats to Bella's Bistro. Our grand reopening

will be the weekend of April 29-30.

What a great weekend I had... Several of my customers (friends) are very talented artists. They are collaboratly a group called "From the Studio". This go around, they were showing at a local store just down the street from Mrs. O'Leary's called Rebecca's. I could have just stayed there all night it was so wonderful.

When I'm in town, I never get beyond my own doors as there is so much work to always get done. I've been missing out big time on this one. Rebecca's is in Old Town, Wichita, Kansas, 300 N. Mead (316-866-2622). Rebecca is a total delight and a talent not to be equaled. What this lady can do with recycled remnants, a bucket of dye and a needle has to be seen to believe. Her clothing is like wearing a beautiful artwork. Heck, even looking at her wall of rolls of fabrics is a complete joy. She graciously showed Jeralyn, Faron and I around her studio and shop. Visiting with all the showing artists on their turf let me get a glimpse into who these amazing women really are. This shop is a destination. It is truly worth a day trip and if you are in the area, you can even stop by to see us at Mrs. O'Leary's and watch as our hibernating cocoon blossoms into a beautiful butterfly as we start on our remodel / expansion this week.

We've been on the road for the better part of the last 2 months. I miss my family, pets and friends so much. I can hardly wait to spend time again with them all. The weather in Santa Fe was beautiful and the mountains are always so magnificent.

Travels from the Lone Star State

Mark and I attended the Adorn Me Convention in Houston this past week. It was great reconnecting with teachers from the past like Keith Lo Bue, Richard and Jane Salley, Sabra Sowell Lovejoy, Janice Berkebile, Susan Lenart Kazmer and her sister Cheri who is now working with her teaching glass castings. I have also been in Texas enough the last couple of years that I'm making lots of friends with some fun gals and gents. The classes were great and I learned a lot about glasswork, enameling, metal forming, soldering, tools and so much more.

We left Houston early Saturday morning and headed for Plano for Stamp Asylum where we taught 30 hours of classes in 3 days. I ended off last evening with hardly a voice and definitely a bit road weary, but we had a late dinner with Monica and Melody that was a treat. We heard all about their travels and plans and plotted to get together along the way the year. Melody does great Copic work and we're working on lining up a time for her to come teach at Mrs. O'Leary's.

Again the day finds us in the truck heading down the road, but this time we're heading home. It will be only for a 1 day stop over, but it will be nice to pet the puppies and switch out the suitcases. Thursday morning we head off one more time this month for Santa Fe. We will be attending the Beadfest show where I will take a couple more classes on enameling and lentil beads. We will also be shopping the showroom for all the latest in tools, wonderful beads and antiquity tidbits

We made a quick stop in Oklahoma City to visit My Heart's Fancy - a great stamp store. They just moved into a new beautiful location a couple of months ago. I talked to Lisa about coming down and teaching some classes later this year. So if you are in that part of the country, check in with them.

Phil, say it ain't so! I thought Punxsutawney Phil said winter was done. Boy did he get the wrong number! We were scheduled to do a rubber-stamp - art show in Clearwater Florida a couple of weeks ago and teach at Stamp Asylum in Plano, Texas on the way. Well - the snow, ice and frigid temperatures in Oklahoma, Texas and some in Kansas kept us at home for 2 weekends in a row. We had to bypass the Clearwater show, but for those of you in the Dallas area, we will be teaching the Altered Charm Sampler on both Sunday and Monday (March 6-7) & the Fairy Gate Book on Saturday (March 5). I'm going to assume that Texas will be without snow this go around...

But we did travel on to Jacksonville Florida to teach at A Small Cleverness last Monday-Thursday. We made lots of new friends and hope we can make our way back there again. From there we traveled onto Columbia, South Carolina to do the Stamp Scrap Art Tour rubber-stamp show. It had been several years since we had made it that way so we enjoyed reconnecting with familiar faces and of course all the vendors that have become our family away from home. And of course an added bonus to our traveling south as a chance to spend the week in flip flops.

We're on the road close to home right now, but we'll take off again on Monday for Houston and the "Adorn Me" jewelry retreat. Mark and I are both going to take classes so we'll come home with new skills and techniques to share with our Wichita friends.

We started off the year flying of to Mexico for our son's wedding to his beautiful fiance Brooke. 40 plus friends and family reunited and partied all week long. What fun we had in Play Del Carmen. Sorry I haven't even seen the wedding pictures yet as we are headed to St. Louis right now to visit for the night and share the picture experience. I'll post some of the pictures soon. We all had so much fun that we are planning on getting back together there again next year and doing art on the beach. Anyone want to join us

I've been sooooo bad not writing in my blog! So Mark is driving us down the highway in the mountains of Tennessee. I'll try to get you updated on my blog without getting carsick going up, down and around the curves. Let's see where we left off this story.

Dateline Cincinnati August 2010...

We made our annual trek to the Stampaway Convention teaching and showing our wares with our traveling show. I'm proud to announce that we once again won best embellishments. FYI I believe class info for 2011 will come out early April.

Minneapolis in September finds us at the Creative Connection Convention. What a fabulous collection of artists. I had SO much fun shopping. Check out our pixs from the show. As the days went by I started to notice that everyone had on fun little shoes and lots and lots of boots so I started taking pictures. Every kind of boot you could imagine was on parade. Pink, orange, lime green cowboy boots, knee high and over the knee, chunky work boots and 5 inch stilettos, they were all there. But I was the only one with flip flops. Now mind you it was Minnesota, but it was still 80 degree and these ladies had come from all over the country. I may not have had bright shinny cowboy boots, but it did have blue toes. Do I get points for that? Those of you that know me know that I always have blue toes. Once in awhile it might be purple for Halloween or another occasion, but always colorful.

To celebrate the season of the night, Mrs. O'Leary's held "Steampunk Halloween". The place was all decked out as well as our customers and ourselves. It was so much fun that I know we will do it bigger and better in "11".

Back to Texas in October teaching at one of our favorite stores "Stamp Asylum" Plano. The following week we returned to Texas attending the Beadfest show in Arlington. It took a couple of great classes including Kim St. Jean's fold forming class. There are a couple of teachers I've met along the way that have a real knack for making things clearly learned and Kim is among that list. If you ever get a chance to take a class from her, do. The end of October found is in Oklahoma City at the big Affair of the Heart arts and crafts sale.

November took us back yet again to Texas, this time Austin. Our friend Joe asked us if we were going to grow steer horns as we had spent most of the fall driving back and forth to Texas. We showed at the Texas Art Educators Ass. show and met lots of new friends.

December found us back home working on all the wedding plans for Travis (son) and lovely fiance Brooke. In fact, as most of you were setting next to your Christmas tree opening presents, we were making tissue paper flowers and hand dying banners. I actually have to admit that I pulled a pre-lit tree from storage and plopped it down in the corner and that was the extent of my holiday decor. No decorations, just the lights that came on it. And sadly it still sets there today. Maybe I'll just leave it there for a Christmas in July celebration. I haven't been home long enough this year to do much but walk by it and sigh.

But 2011 January started of in wonderful Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. What fun we all had. 40 plus friends and family gathered for a week long celebration of parties and pleasure and of course a little shopping. Check out the next blog posting that will start us out in 2011.

Back at the Ranch.

Welwe've been back home for a couple of weeks, but we haven't wasted a moment. We had to get going on classes as our home base or we'd have some really unhappy customers. Today we did the "On the Boardwalk" memo board. We will be repeating that class for "Art Unplugged" in 2 weeks (check out the next posting). I thought you might enjoy seeing some of our Mrs. O'Leary's pictures.

How do you like my new stamping buddy Gus. I was puppy sitting one day and he just had to get into the action. Yes, can you believe a puppy! He is only 3 months old. Check out the size of those paws. And what a sweetheart he is. Gus belongs to one of our Club managers Dan, so I get to play with him and then send him home to be fed.

We have so many new stamps (250 new images have just been added), shirts, kits and more. Tomorrow while you will be celebrating, I will be working away on the new web site. Hopefully the new site or at least the new edition of the catalog will be up next week? I will also be using my new Bloggie camera to produce instruction CD'd for the various new kits and projects. I can't believe it has already been over 2 months since we were at Stamp Asylum, Plano Texas. What a wonderful store. Monica and here staff are not only knowledgeable about their products, but make going feel just like being surrounded by good friends. I nabbed Debbie and made her take the trip with me. We had a great time, but worked hard fitting 7 classes into the 3 days. If in the Dallas area, check with Monica about our fall classes there. We will be back in Plano the 2nd weekend in October 2010 with a whole new set of classes.

A couple of weeks ago Faron and I took out for St. Louis to do a show in Collinsville, Ill. Son Travis and his fiance Brooke that live there did on sight printing of our newest shirt designs. It was a hit and we had so much fun. We hadn't attended the show in a couple of years, so it was a chance to meet up with old friends and we made some wonderful new ones as well. Greetings all. Sorry about skipping through the last few months, but for those of you that don't know, we also run an outdoor restaurant/bar and we have been up to eyeballs with 18-20 hour work days.

Most of our staff are soccer players or at least fans, so we have been having World Cup parties and parties and parties..... Even when the USA lost we had a party.

Somewhat of a bummer is the fact that our car was broken into and we lost a lot of things including my camera that I keep with me at all times to catch those unexpected moments. I had lots of stills and video to load on the blog that are now gone. So we start anew with another camera. Now I have a Sony Bloggie so I can record myself and show the steps in making the kits - projects.

Sorry to be out of touch, but as soon as my feet hit the Kansas soil, I started running like crazy! Not only am I far behind in jewelry orders etc. but there is so much info and so many classes that I want to get on the books for everyone to enjoy. As promised in my emails, I'm going to put up on the blog upcoming classes so you can check them out. Take a look at the great tags that Elaine did leading the past 2 distressed tag weekends.

A reminder that I will be teaching bookmaking, collage, and cold connection jewelry at Stamp Asylum in Plano TX April 23-25. it is such a great store. You in the Dallas area as so lucky to have someone like Monica bringing you the latest gizmos, papers, stamps etc. Monica and I put our heads together yesterday and decided to have an open house on Friday evening the 24th. At the open house I will be demonstration metal smithing and cold connection jewelry techniques - cutting metal, sawing, filing, riveting, torching head pins etc. I will also be bringing a piece of my handmade jewelry (Zodiac-Birthstone Bracelet $40 value) to offer as a door prize. In addition I will give a jewelry parts pack to anyone spending $50 or more in tools. Along with teaching the classes, I'll be bringing a trunk show for rubber stamps, metal working tools and metals. It snowed again overnight and a major storm is quickly approaching so we loaded up early and are headed home. 15 days of the last 3 weeks I've spent living out of a suitcase. I'm ready to be home. I miss you all. We did spend our last day in Santa Fe visiting the Canyon Road galleries and a trip around the mountain roads.

We finally made it through all of Beadfest and now we are onto a day of sightseeing and shopping. We started off at the Loretto Chapel constructed in 1850. We weaved in and out of the myriad of shops & Galleries, stopping for refreshments along the way including a yummy break at Hagen Daus. We made a stop at the "Leslie Flynt Gallery". They have the best socks every. I picked up 2 more pair for me and then a set of baby socks for my Fretz (jewelry) hammers. I'll have the best dressed hammers in town. We ended our outing in the Cannon Road Gallery District taking a stroll through the various sculpture gardens.

OK, last show day. I think I'm actually beaded out. I drug myself out of bed this morning and went off to my last class. In the past 15 days, I have attended 89 hours of classes. Today I had a class with Kim St. Jean. I got most of the project done in the morning and I wanted to grab a couple of things at the show still so I said my good byes and off I went to empty my pocketbook of the last coins I had. Intending to only pick up a few things, it transformed into a few more and oh maybe just 2 of those and 3 of those. You get the idea. They had to push us out the door. But they did announce that there would be a Beadfest Texas the first weekend in October of this year.

After the show, we headed off to the Burrito Co. for nourishment, yum, yum and since the t-shirt shop was next door I had to add to my Santa Fe shirt collection.

Tomorrow is shopping, eating and sight seeing. It will be good to let my brain unwind.

Spring snowstorm in the mountains

Isn't it the first day of Spring? Skiers delight, but not so much for us. I understand that this weather went right across the country and hit home too. The difference here was that they close the mountain roads and Faron and Elaine got stuck on the other side. They weren't able to get to the bead show yesterday, but they had fun visiting with all the other guests stranded at their hotel. They will have to hit the bead show early this morning as this is the last day.

Mark and I had to really scurry about yesterday morning as there was ice under all that snow that had to be scraped. But we managed to get settled into our morning classes without being too late. I thought Mark did a wonderful job constructing this bracelet from pieces of various sizes silver wire. We will toss it in the tumbler when we get home and it will be beautiful. Even the teacher was amazed at how well it came out for him as he has only dabbled with the metalsmithing. Remember the Valentine earrings he made me? I think he's a natural. I spent he day with Beth Kraft and her cousin Mandy, from Rochester, Minnesota. Beth has a family run bead store there and does the most innovative fun designs. Can you tell how much I enjoyed them by how many kits I purchased to bring home. The class was so fun - what a great way to spend a snowy day. The only drawback was that the room was only about 50 degrees and we had a hard time picking up the beads as our fingers were so cold... brr... I continued darting around the show during stolen break, lunch times, finding yet more treasure to return home with. Mark and I met up to attend the evening class together. Our evening class involved learning all the tips and techniques of silver soldering. Lexi Erickson who has been a jewelry and teacher for 25 years was our instructor. Not only did she give us a wealth of knowledge sharing how she has honed her skills and achieved the perfect soldering techniques, but she was willing to answer all our question about those pesky little projects that you wondered, "how did they do that?"

We grabbed a quick sandwich on the way back to our hotel. Remember I'm spending all my lunch, dinner breaks shopping. Granola bars and nut clusters are carrying me through the days. Faron and Elaine finally made it in and we had a time of show and tell of all our projects and purchases. I did find a great new product today - wire lace. Not only will it be a fun addition to the jewelry projects, but I can see all kinds of uses for it in collage and mixed media. I snatched onto a collection of antique coins, fossils and African crystals to bring back and I'm going to be adding a line of "Ashes to Beauty" embellishments to the store. You know when I get home, I'm going to have to really clear out the classroom/studio space of all the extras to make room for all the fun new toys that we will be adding. Don't forget that we will be having "Show & Tell" at the store next Saturday after the class.

We are staying in yet another wonderful hotel. But as you can see, we've traded in the palm trees for Pinon Pines. There are fireplaces in all the lobbies and restaurants burning the pinon wood. It has a wonderful earthy aroma that penetrates even our hotel room. We haven't had anytime to catch the sights of the town, but on our way to lunch I snapped a shot of the mountain ahead of us and in the courtyard of the restaurant was this casting, "Great Raven With Apple" sculpted by Peter Woytuk, 1958. During afternoon classes yesterday there was a thunder snow taking place outside and we momentarily lost power. Life in the mountains.

I've had a couple of full days of classes so far, taking Janice Berkebile's fusing, Susan Lewis' PMC and Denise Peck (editor of "Wire to Wire"), viking knit. I haven't had time to finish any of the completely, as I've been making mad dashes to the showroom floor searching out the best baubles to add to the stash. That haul was from only a combined hour of shopping time. The other showroom for Beadfest is in another hotel location. It was open Thursday night for 3 hours. It was my only chance to scour those vendors items and check out all the teachers tables as I'm in class all the other open times. But I made good use of my time. I always feel like a pack animal with a multitude of bags slung over my shoulders resting (or should I say weighing down) on my back. But I made tool purchases for O'Leary's studio, found some new wire and charm sources and a great gilding patina. The other showroom is located in the same building as I'm taking classes, so every time I go to wash my hands or grab a soda etc. I make the "Family Circus" beeline around a couple of isles taking notes on the "must return to" booths. Mark went on to Albuquerque yesterday to take an all day private lesson with Rashan Omari Jones at his glass studio. They had a great time together and Rashan will bring his kiln finished pieces to him on Sunday.

Today I have beading classes and Mark is going to be making a heavy silver hinged bracelet. We actually have a silver soldering class together tonight. Faron and Elaine will be arriving around noon time, so we'll send them on to the bead show to scout out and shop while we are tied up in the classes.

Well since the clock is striking 3AM, I must catch a couple of hours of sleep so I can continue on my quest of searching out the best stuff and skills to bring home to you all.

Since returning home from Houston I've had so much catching up to do that the blog time was sacrificed. To recap my Houston travels, 9 days, about 50 hours of shut eye time, 17 hours of dining, 19 hours of packing and repacking, 21 hours of driving and 55 hours of class time. It tires me out just to hear it again.

Well we're not in Kansas anymore, but we are still where the deer and the antelope play. For those of you that aren't from Kansas, that is a reference to "Home on the Range" our state song. Mark and I are on our way to Santa Fe, New Mexico to attend Beadfest. Since I'm not the driver this time, I'm having fun taking pictures and enjoying the scenery. Isn't the moon and the North star over the mountain sunset beautiful.

An hour to go till we arrive at our hotel and my classes start at 9 in the morning with a bracelet fusing class being taught by Janice Berkebile. It will be good to see a familiar face to start the week as she was also in Houston. Once again my days will be back to back classes through Sunday. There is also a large bead show going on at the same time so I will be bringing beads home to share with you all. I have barely touched the ones I purchased last year (probably because I bought a suitcase full), so these will be for the store shelves. Well I may have to save 1 or 2 for my stash.

I promise to send the daily blogs telling of my jewelry adventures. For those of you that have tried to commit, sorry - apparently I had the lock on and you couldn't connect without first being a follower. But now you can send me your feedback via comment to the blog.

Realism ends.. Reality will begin...

Our last arty day is at hand. Breakfast was all a-buzz. Everyone was having their last visits. Some were trying to get their supplies together for class and yet others were waiting with stacked bags for the airport shuttles. Bonnie had her class with the woven silver pendant and I had a day with Richard Salley working with enameling. Of course during our break times I scurried back to Keith's room as I had been there everyday and it just wasn't natural not to be there. Actually I had to say good bye to Laurie. I met Laurie one evening in class and discovered what an amazing sweet soul this young lady was. I had double booked a class as I wanted the info from both and Liza was too tired to stay for one of her's so we gave our classes to Laurie. She was new to this style of art medium, so I loaned her the tools she needed and gave her a couple of quick wire lessons. Boy was she a fast learner! She surprised me the next day with this necklace. She is a lampworker and this is the first bead she had ever made. I can't believe she gave it to me. I will treasure it always as well as her friendship. She and her husband bought a fixer upper house on ebay in St. John's Kansas. She has promised to visit as they drive through Wichita. Can't wait. As Keith stated in his closing comment last evening, a huge thank you to Linda and Chuck Young for putting together this event. It was a 3 year process and in all our opinion well worth it. It was an amazing community all week. We all collectively got it! The jewelry, the art and the feeling behind it all. I would highly recommend to any of you that are interested in this medium to save your pennies and make it a priority to attend next year. I know I'm going home and blocking out the week on my calendar for "2011".

Well we have our bags packed and heading to the trunk to make our return voyage. But of course we will make a detour via "Texas Art Store". Already in my head are plans taking form to have a show and tell with pictures and purchases for all of my friends back home, so check the email later this week to find out when.

As the down elevator passed by the 2nd floor (classrooms) and the doors opened momentarily, I caught a glimpse of how the view had changed. No longer were artists chatting, hugging and rushing off to classes with their jewels singing songs of joy. No longer was Rice' sitting cross legged on the lounge with her computer in her lap. No longer was Earl with his hot pink and lime green attire taking pictures of all our treasures. And no longer was their a creative fog lingering around us nurturing our souls. They had all be replaced with men in crisply ironed oxford shirts with cell phones attached to their heads.

Almost done but hanging in there...

So my day started at 4AM! My brain is so jammed full of thoughts and ideas that it is trying to escape out my ears. I just couldn't stay asleep so I got up and worked on ideas for new classes to bring home. Bonnie and I actually got to go to class together today and it's a good thing. At this point in the game it takes two brains to understand what we are being told. We did the "Chain Gang" with Keith today and it was wonderful. Forging and working with re-bar tie wire is a new love! Check out our bracelets. It was our last class time with Keith so we will sadly bid adieu to our new found friend, but we will never forget all the skills he shared with us and his terrific sense of humor. Bonnie went on to her class with Lisa Palvelka doing faux dichroic glass and I finished up my class of color smash with Sabra Sowell-Lovejoy. I think I actually nodded off during the lecture portion. Sorry Sabra, but I really loved the class and learned so much. I promise it's all in the notes. I have 25 pages of notes so far. I did experimenting in that class and started what will turn out to be the base for a pin. One more day. Think we can make it?

Today was full of hurry scurry! I had a papering class with Keith Lo Bue today and learned all about the properties and ways to use adhesives and resins. I had to dart in and out of class a bit as I was getting things finished up for showing in the Expo tonight. We only had an hour to set up, and 3 hours to sell, so we had to be ready quick. Other then our charge machine not being able to pick up satellite, the evening went well. After the show, we loaded up the truck with all the extra class supplies and show merchandise. Now it's regroup and get ready for tomorrow. Bonnie and I are taking the chain gang class. It will be great, except for listening to 20 plus hammer on steel for 8 hours. I'm really looking forward to these last 3 classes as they all have elements that are new to me. I think my hands are permanently stained from ink, paints and patinas and for some reason I have bruises, cuts and burns on one arm. We have sore backs and tired feet, but we'll come hobbling home soon with tales of new found friends and adventure.

Well here I am again past midnight. I just got my class bags all repacked for tomorrow and I'm ready to grab a couple of hours of shut eye. You can see by the picture of our room that we have lots of stuff. But believe it or not, it is very organized. In fact everyone in my classes calls me the stash because I always have what everyone is needing.

Bonnie did Amy Hanna's Heritage House Canvas class tonight. She doesn't have it finished completely, but I like what I'm seeing. After she completes the houses, the canvas will hold adornments (jewelry) to contrast with the papers, ribbons and paints. I was back in Keith Lo Bue's classroom today for etching. I learned a lot of different ways to work with the chemicals, transfer resists and make our own patinas. Tonight I did a class called "Color Smash" that took me into a whole new world of fold forming and distress enameling. We will have so many techniques to share with everyone when we get home. And don't forget, not only do we have 3 more days of classes here, but I'll also be taking other types of classes in Santa Fe yet this month. I'm showing you the "work in progress" of my Precious Little class. I'm so excited about the journey finishing it will take me. Tune in tomorrow as I'll have a paper application class to tell you about.

The end of day 3

The clock just struck midnight and I just finished packing back up for tomorrow, but let me tell you about our wonderful day.

Bonnie took the "Twisted Sister" necklace class all day. She said it was so much fun and we can't wait to share with all of you back home. Wait till you see it in person, it is amazing.

I returned to my "Precious Little" class with Keith LoBue. The picture shows just part of the tables of all our found objects and tools. We worked right through both of our meal breaks. As you can see the pizza had to just stack up with all the rest of the stuff. We worked, slash that, played for 12 hours straight. I love the piece I'm working on, but it isn't ready to share yet. Actually, it will probably take me an entire day to finish. Saturday I'll be taking the class that will be making the chain for it.

Boy guys, I'm loving the classes, but it's also really tiring. I had classes yesterday from 9-9. The day class was "Tools of the Trade" and how to use them. Keith Lo Bue taught us his caveman approach of leaning to get the best use of his tools and materials. I even have a little sample piece of glass he demonstrated on to add to my junk necklace. I have about 10 pages of notes to share with you all. When I get back, we will have a couple of extensive days on drilling. Last night in his class of "Precious Little" we did a fun group project. It really didn't matter how your piece came out as much as what you learned from going through the exercise. Needless to say, I didn't have any trouble sleeping last night. Today it's back to Keith's classroom to create a found object piece and then tonight Bonnie and I are both taking his riveting class together. I also made new friends Liza, Sandra and Laurie from Texas, Gail from Albequerque, Katie from Scottsdale, Greg from NY and many more. Well it's off to class for the day...

Opening Reception

The reception tonight was a blast. We met people from all over the county all excited to start the journey this week. We have new friends already... Joann from Kalamazoo MI, Kathy from Fayetteville, TN & Andi from West Virginia. We also had a chance to meet all the artist/teachers and see the pieces that they will be teaching us throughout this week.

Jill Allison Bryan is a singer/songwriter and creativity coach. She was our keynote speaker. Her theme for the evening was "infinite possibility" and she shared with us 5 steps to finding space in our lives for our passions. Now it's back to the room, but don't fret, I'm not going to bed. Of course I have to stay up and solder the trades I want to share. I'm just practicing finding space for my art.

Dorothy, we're not in Kansas anymore! Greetings from sunny Houston. Bonnie & I had a great ride down yesterday and only broke one law, so far that is. In the middle of a 6 lanes of traffic we got in the EZ auto pay lane on the tollway (my auto pay card is only good for Kansas). Somewhere there is a picture being posted of 2 slightly confused ladies saying oops. FYI, the hotel is beautiful and everyone is so friendly. We ventured out this morning with the help of our new friend Agnes, our GPS. For an inanimate object she sure talks a lot, and her favorite word is "recalculate". Our morning outing was to the Texas Art Supply Store. Boy they have everything. We spent 2 hours perusing the isles and on the way out we saw more things that we hadn't noticed. But with our arms weighted down with shopping bags we decided to leave something for the rest of the Texas.

Now it's time to catch up on a bit of paperwork and some R&R before things get started tonight at the kick off party. The convention goers are starting to check into the hotel, so we will be making lots of new friends. Tune in again tomorrow to see where our adventure takes us.

I've been packing up tools and supplies, checking and rechecking my many lists. I suppose I should really take time to pack things like clothes and a toothbrush as well. Bonnie and I leave early Sunday morning for the Adorn Me jewelry Expo and classes in Houston. Be sure to check back to see my postings of our journey over the next 10 days.

We just heard that we will be teaching 3 classes at StampAway (Cincinnati, OH) this coming August. Their classes registration usually comes out in the Spring. Open Workshop 2-18

We had an open metals workshop last evening at the store. Can you believe that the materials cost of these bracelets range from $1-$7. I am always totally amazed at the designs that are created. Not to mention the best social time to be had.

I have to tell you about the earrings. My wonderful husband (and he really is!) surprised me on Valentine's morning with these earring that he made all by himself. The girls said he was in the workroom for hours working away trying to figure how to use all the tools. He cut out the hearts, textured and patinaed them, made his own headpins and even figured out how to do the wire wrapping. Aren't I a lucky girl. Cost of goods, $3 - Cost of the gift, PRICELESS!

Check out the wonderful necklaces that were made in this metals class. Some of these were made by ladies that had never worked with the metals or tools before. I was sooo impressed.
